A palatant is a flavour enhancer which is often added to animal feed to improve feed intake and performance. There are a number of factors that can affect feed intake such as the energy density of the diet, ambient temperature, immune status, stocking density, genetics and palatability of the feed. Palatability of the feed can also be negatively affected by medications or flavour lost during the production processes therefore feed often has an added flavour to stimulate animals to eat the feed or to attract animals to the feed.
